BMW SAFETY

BMW has always been setting benchmarks in vehicle safety. There is no end to our quest for the next innovation. And it’s not just about greater power and more efficient performance. It’s also about safety. We prepare our vehicles to expect the unexpected. Before you step into a BMW, we do our best to try to make it the safest drive.

BMW Group philosophy, ‘sheer driving pleasure’ and safety goes hand in hand. BMW vehicles have earned their highest ratings not just recently, but year after year, and generation after generation. At BMW, safety has been a pillar of the brand for well over half a century.

A series of pioneering safety innovations has made BMW vehicles leader in the automotive safety over the years. BMW cars have been designed not only to meet or exceed applicable laws and regulations, but also to advance the state-of-the-art in safety whenever practicable.

SAFETY BODYSHELL.

Safety Bodyshell

The BMW safety bodyshell gives you excellent all-round protection: numerous reinforcements in the front, sides, the B column and the rear, plus new highly robust materials, ensure extremely effective occupant protection in the event of a collision. The exceptional stiffness of the bodyshell starts with the specially reinforced body floor, constructed of high-strength steel. This serves as the solid foundation for the occupant cell. Strong A, B and C columns and integrated side impact protection, highly stable crossmembers along the sills and under the seats all create a very rigid safety cage that preserves the occupants' survival space in the event of an accident.

SIDE IMPACT PROTECTION.

Side impact protection

BMW automobiles are designed with a highly effective side impact protection system. This ranges from highly stable doors and a particularly robust B column to specialized head and side protection airbags. Diagonal aluminium cross-members are embedded within each door and ensure that the doors and side walls are exceptionally strong and stiff, preventing intrusion of external objects into the cabin.

BUMPER SYSTEM.

Bumper System

Bumper System with reversible aluminium impact absorbers; replaceable deformation elements at the front and rear absorb impact forces at speeds of up to 15 km/h without damage to the car’s body; energy-absorbing foam in the front bumper allows impacts at up to 4 km/h to be absorbed without damage.

CRASH SENSORS.

Crash Sensors

Crash Sensors in the A and B columns and in the doors of the vehicle register an accident at the earliest moments and react within milliseconds. The correct airbags are deployed to the appropriate degree, depending on which seats are occupied and the severity of the impact. Seatbelt pre-tensioners and the optional active headrests are activated at the right moment. If necessary, the battery and generator are disengaged and fuel pump deactivated to reduce the danger of fire. The central locking system unlocks all the doors and the cabin light and warning lights are illuminated.

AIRBAGS.

Airbags

Airbags are just one of the passive safety elements in the vehicle that make up a perfectly coordinated system. The driver and front passenger airbags provide effective protection for the head and upper-torso area, preventing contact with the steering wheel and dashboard. The side airbags are constructed in such a way as to offer effective protection across the entire seat position area. Thanks to the intelligent design, all occupants benefit from additional side protection regardless of their position - whether seat is forward or back, or whether the backrest is upright or reclined.

BMW RESTRAINT SYSTEM.

BMW Restraint System

BMW Restraint System for the driver and front passenger, comprises three-point seat belts combined with integral tensioners and force limiters. So in the event of a collision, passengers are held safely in their seats. The seat belt buckles in the rear are marked to avoid them being incorrectly fastened.

DYNAMIC STABILITY CONTROL (DSC).

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) adds to safety by facilitating vehicle control even in adverse driving conditions or on tough surfaces. It recognises the risk of skidding before it occurs and stabilises the car in milliseconds. The traction mode control in Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) allows increased wheel slip to enable more dynamic driving.

RUN-FLAT TYRES.

Run-Flat tyres

Run-Flat tyres remain functional even after a complete loss of pressure. With runflat tyres fitted, one can continue driving for up to a speed of 80 km/h without any significant loss in vehicle stability. Hence, a spare tyre is no longer required, reducing vehicle weight, enhancing performance and reducing fuel consumption.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS).

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) even when applying the full force of braking power, the vehicle remains under complete control thanks to the Anti-lock Brake System. It uses precise regulation of the braking pressure on the individual wheels to ensure that the vehicle can always be steered easily. ABS prevents the wheels from locking, regardless of the road surface’s friction coefficient and the applied brake pressure.

BMW has earned the highest ratings for our vehicles by the most well-known authorities on automotive safety such as:

  1. Euro NCAP (The European New Car Assessment Programme), Europe
  2. Safecar – NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), USA
  3. AU-NCAP (Australia New Car Assessment Programme), Australia
  4. IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), USA
